Commercial Revitalization

Penrose Square Plaza
Penrose Square

The Commercial Revitalization Program (also known as the Community Conservation Program) supports development and revitalizes specific commercial areas — the Columbia Pike corridor and the Shirlington Road Special Revitalization District. A strategic geographical focus helps maximize our capital investments and enhance Arlington’s image and sense of community.

Revitalization improvements include:

  • Streetscaping
  • Utility undergrounding
  • Landscaping
  • Lighting
  • Public art
  • Transportation improvements
  • Other planning and design assistance

Projects In-Process

This district will be anchored by an urban plaza in the form of the Nauck Town Square. This project will serve as the social and cultural center for the neighborhood and surrounding areas. Associated with the Nauck Town Square is the Nauck Infrastructure Fund, which assists in off-setting costs associated with making public improvements designed to benefit the community. These improvements include streetscape, utility undergrounding, lighting, landscaping, transportation improvements, shared parking and other approved planning or design assistance.

Completed Projects

Penrose Square is the first and largest of three new squares planned within the Columbia Pike Town Center node. The project includes a water feature, hardscape, landscaping, site furnishings, retaining walls and public art.
